Mangoes

I think that mangoes must be one of my all time favourite fruits.
The ones that you get from the supermarket here in the UK are just NOT right; they're hard, crunchy, greeny/red. That's just wrong! ...I just don't understand why they are hard enough to skewer and chargrill on the bbq!!

Mangoes should be small, YELLOW, with a thin soft skin and most importantly,...smells of mango when you take a sniff. They have to be eaten in private because when you've finished, you'll have the delicious mangoey juices running all over your face and hands- that's the sign of a good mango!

Seeing this box of mangoes really reminds me of HK. Funnily, not of recent times....but of times of old. I recollect walking with my maternal grandparents down from their flat- the hill that brings you from near the top down to the bottom where we would get a tram to go yumcha (go eat breakfast dimsum). There was a stall in the middle, which always sold these mangoes.

I remember my paternal grandfather loved mangoes. I remember him in HK in the summer (I only have memories of HK in the summer as I would only ever go back during the holidays). He would slice it up and score the flesh of the fruit so that it was like a hedgehog and eat it.

For those people who are lucky enough to get hold of sweet tasting mangoes like this, besides just eating them as they are, one of the best ways is to make mango milkshake. My uncle made it once in HK for us, and it was one of the most amzaing things that I have ever drunk.  I still remember it to this day. It was that good.

  1. These mangoes are my favourite fruit!
Every Indian household is very familiar with a sweet smelling box of yellow mangoes - with lots of pink and purple shredded paper used for packaging in the box.
I met an amazing woman in NYC who was in her 70's but looked like she was in her 50's. What was her secret? Her kitchen was full of mangoes; she eats them everyday!
