Now that the sun has finally decided to show, a few things immediately seems to happen to the people in the UK; we try desparately to spend as much time as possible in the sun for fear that the sun won't come out again, the summer wardrobe can finally come out from the cobwebs, the beer gardens and parks are full of people drinking and eating together, people forget that the sun is actually quite strong and end up pretty shades of 'red'. Most importantly, people are so much happier! It's all good; while it lasts.

Over the years I kind of forgot that McDonalds did ice-cream. It's not really advertised that much, I guess that it's never quite the weather for ice-cream. Anyways, it was quite hot the other day and mum and I decided that we wanted ice-cream as we wondered around the shopping mall in Milton Keynes. We happened to pass by McDonalds and thought, why not? It has been years since I tasted McDonalds ice-cream, and it hasn't changed one bit- it's still as amazing.

I remember back to my childhood days when my parents would buy us this ice-cream. I'm not sure why, but my memories always seem to take me back to Hong Kong. May be because we didn't really go to McDonalds here in the UK, but it was so convinient in HK, and it was always hot! I recollect a time when they were doing lots of different flavours and you could get a half-and-half mix cone. Mmmmmm......

Falafel- a middle eastern snack made from ground chickpea mixed with various spices, parsley and garlic. It's soft and light on the inside, yet crisy and crunchy on the outside.

I can't remember the first time that I tried it, but I definately rememeber that I didn't like it- it was green on the inside!!! Now, I've grown to be quite fond of them- especially if they're fresh! The market stall near my work do a very good falafel wrap, and so does Pret!
So, everyone knows what a falafel is nowerdays- it's so wellknown. A classic meze or item found on the menus of most middle eastern restaurants in the UK. It's amazing how this humble falafel can surprisingly be sold as a pretty pricey starter!

I love markets because I love people. I was feeling a bit dull and down yesterday- the toll of a lack of sleep and being in a sleepy environment led me to escape to the outside world for a few moments. So into Tachbrook Market I wondered, in search for inspiration more than anything else. God really does know how to cheer me up: I was given a falafel heart by Ali (the guy that I met on the day of my interview), spoke to other random people from the middle east and Europe and gave out some of my own origami hearts. Felt just like old times. Felt a bit more alive. Felt more at home.
The toasted teacake is generally not the most popualr choice nowerdays when it comes to the mid-morning or afternoon snack. I guess most of us usually go for a biscuit, piece of cake or may be a cream scone. But, there is something comforting in this simple, yet filling savoury bite.

I think that I was only really introduced to this when I started to volunteer with older people at university. I found myself taking older people out on trips; often involving walking around markets and then finding a cafe to enjoy a good cup of tea and a toasted teacake. I don't think that I remember any other times when I would go for the teacake. Tasting this teacake again after such a long time relly brings me back to memories of Blackpool, Great Yarmouth, Chatsworth; thoughts of all the lovely older people that I used to see.

I'm not quite sure why it seems like such an old fashioned thing. It's kind of like a bagel, only without the hole and a lot lighter. The melted butter provdes just enough savouryness to counteract the sweetness of the bread and raisins and the tea is great to wash it all down. A fab snack that will keep you going till lunch time! It seems such an out-of-date now; only served at local cafes or teashops. We had these in RJ's in Hull on Friday morning- we seemed to fit right in, although it was the elderly people who were all having teacakes and the young people chose to have early lunches of toasties, sandwiches, or jacket potatoes. Crumpets and teacakes were definately good enough for us!

Mmmm....good times!
There are chicken shops EVERYWHERE in London! Literally. It seems to be an obsession or something! But, I can understand it- fried chicken and chips is pretty good stuff! Channel 4 even did a whole programme on it a few weeks/months ago: The fried chicken shop: life in a day

In my opinion, there are two good chicken shops in Hull; Yankie Chicken on Beverley Road and Chicken George on Paragon Square. Some of the students at the Chinese church were obsessed with Yankie for some reason, and would go to eat the chicken even after a full meal. I only ever knew of the place because I worked at the Sainsbury's Local (Jacksons) a couple of doors down and some of us would occassionally get a chicken box during our break. The shop also belonged to one of the girls there, so we all kind of 'knew' each other, as it is in Hull. I was introduced to Chicken George (see above picture) when I was at ARKH. By Salam. Every so often Salam would get us some chicken and chips to eat in the office. We would literally stink the office out, but it was great. I really do treasure those good old days.Chicken and chips never quite tastes the same without that atmosphere- plus, you get chip spice in Hull, which you don't really find anywhere else!

Skittle are my all time favourite sweets.

They usually come in small bags of about 55g doses, which is never quite enough, or in large share pouches with a lovely little rainbow sticker that you're suposed to use to re-seal the bag (thats if they ever last that long!). Either way...they taste so great! I haven't seen this packaging for ages; it's a pack that contains 4 small boxes of skittles- 2 normal flavours (red) and 2 sour flavours (green). The only time that I really saw this packaging was in the ASDA in Hull. At that time I was working at ASDA and they were on offer- needless to say, I bought a fair number of these. Seeing these again really took me back to my ASDA days as checkout girl!

I often say to people that one of my favourite jobs was working at ASDA. And I have absolutely no problem with that. I really well and truely loved it. I was there, given a task and all the tools to do it and I did it. If I needed anything, I knew that I could call someone straight away and someone would come and help me, I knew that I wasn't pressured into working at a super high speed because if the queues were too long, they would call for more tills. The only stress that you start to feel is when you start to run out of bags and the customers haven't brought their bags for life and the customer is double bagging everything. Then you start to worry. The real reason why I loved the job wasn't because it was an easy job, but because I got the chance to meet people. Normal people from the local community. I got the chance to have a conversation and have a small insight into the chunk of someone's life. From the early morning shoppers who have just come off shift and are ready to go home to bed, to those who rush in late at night to buy the emergency baby milk, the weekends where grown adullt children bring their elderly parent to buy their weekly groceries and where couples get their pizza, bottle of wine and movie snacks ready for a nice night in. It's fascinating. So many stories, so many different people's lives. On the odd occassions, you'll come across the same people and you can have a sense of familiarity for those few minute that you serve them- you can go a little beyond the 'how are you today'. It was funny to be there during particular times; there was the digital change-over where everyone suddenly came in to buy the digital box thing and we were sold out, parents often run in trying to get a advent calendar or easter eggs for their kids, and there's the mad rush at Christmas. People are funny.

Yes, life is pretty interesting to say the least. We have all have a different life that doesn't really seem to overlap quite as much with other people. I'm pretty blessed to have been able to meet different people from different walks of life and see a little into how they live and what for.

Taste the Rainbow- there's always sunshine after the rain and hope that comes with the rainbow.

New style Wine gums; a promotional freebie given out on the way to work. I actually got 3 packets!
These reminds me of my brother. He used to love getting the normal tube of original Maynard Wine Gums. It was either that or Haribo.

Companies seem to be always trying to make new flavours and takes on their original products- but they never really catch on. I mean, who really wants sour wine gums? I remember when the KitKat Chunky first came out; loved them because they were special enough to be a different product, but somehow still tasted the same. Now, there are a million flavours of KitKat Chunky- it's ridiculous, but (call me boring) I would still go for the original flavour anyday!

I'm pretty blessed in that I really do not have much of a commute. I feel sorry for the people who have to spend hours on the train or tube to get to work; getting up at strange hours of the morning to not even be able to get a seat on the train and have to stand for ages with a cup of Starbucks coffee in one hand, squashed between business people who are either reading the latest financial report on the iphone or browsing through the Metro. Above all, what is striking is the utter silence. Everyone is plugged in- I'd love to know what everyone is listening to.

So, I guess freebies on the way to work come as a welcomed surprise; it offers a split second of interaction with someone and heyho, who doesn't like something for nothing? Victoria Station is always buzzing in the morning; mostly people 'running' to work, but now that it's nearing summer, there seems to be an awful lot of tourists floating around the place as well. During the past few months, I have been offered a fair number of random things, including endless Metros and Timeout:
Saturday morning: what's your preference?

I've never really had the traditional Canadian breakfast, despite having visited Toronto on a fair few occassions. Somehow, it's always ended up being dimsum brunch! I guess some traditions never change and if you're Chinese- you really do prefer Chinese food! Well...at least for my grandfather!

I've just started to go to a pastorate that meets every couple of weeks on a Saturday morning. We meet at a different person's house each time and they have the responsibility of preparing breakfast. Wer'e a pretty international bunch of people from different backgrounds. Yesterday was at Jonathan and Leanne's place; Canadians.

Next to the continental favourites of crossiants, yoghurt and fruit was the Canadian alternative:
I received this absolutely AMAZING present through the post yesterday; it's so amazing on so many different levels. Plus, it came all the way from Kurdistan so the recipes should be pretty authentic, right?!!

Since moving to London, not only have I failed to cook properly, but I have stopped being able to 'pop' over to other people's house to eat or to taste bits of their dinner or what they were cooking. I relish the days in Hull where everyone lived so close that it was impossible to not meet- unlike here in London where it's almost impossible to meet without a prior appointment, at least a couple of weeks in advance!

Just the thought of Kurdish food reminds me of Hull- of the community that once played such a big part of my life and my past for the past few years. It's become part of me so much that even the smell of middle eastern food reminds me of Hull. Chinese smells strangely only remind me of Hong Kong and not of Hull! Weird....

Obviously I haven't had a chance to cook anything, but I've had a little flick through the book:

Dolma is one of the most key dishes that is made when guests come or only probably a couple of times a month as it takes quite a while. It always astonishes me how this is usually made on such a huge scale (big big pot), and also the amount that you end up eating! It's so good!! Everyone has their favourite part of the dish that they like; it usually contains stuffed aubergine, tomatoes, pototoes, courgettes, vine leaves, beans aswell as meat. my favourite has to be the onion. I've lost count of the the number of times that I've help to carefully spoon the stuffed vine leaves first from the top onto the large silver platter and then the larger veg and finally the rest is poured on top to make a very big dish of food. Yummmmm....
Mastaw is often served with dolma. It literally means yoghurt water. As much as I'd love to say that I like it, I don't. I usually eat and drink most things, but I still didn't quite get this. Although it's seen as a great drink- I just cannot stomach it! May be it's due to my Chinese upbringing which has a minimal amount of dairy stuff- my experience of yoghurt was mainly 'Munch Bunch' fromage frais in my lunchbox and Muller-rice (which isn't even yoghurt!)
Any good meal Kurdish cannot be served without bread! I love it all. I remember back to when I visited Kurdistan, I saw some women sitting outside making the nanitteri, which is dry and wafer thin crispy bread that can be stored in a stack for ages. When you want to eat it, all you do is to sprinkle a bit water, cover with a cloth and it becomes so soft that it's great eaten with anything.

I know that kebabs and schwarma are quite common fast food meals that a lot of people associate with middle eastern food, but I think that the Kurdish make the most amazing shifta and kubba. I'd be happy just to eat that! Shifta is like a really soft kebab- made with minced meat, onion, tomato and parsley. Shano makes really good shifte and I remember helping to make some amazing ones in Sulimaniyeh as well. Kubba is like a big rugby shaped ball of minced meat (keema) surrounded by a layer of bulgar and rice. It's absolutely delicious. Both taste great just eaten by themselves, or with a salad and bread.
I could go on forever, as there are so many recipes and each remind me of something different, something familiar. I'm just ending with red rice, as it reminds me of Khozga. It's one of her favourite foods and her mum makes it so well for her.

So, I'm looking to returning back to Hull in a few weeks time, not for the food....but for the people that I love so much. Until then....this book will be a great reminder of the precious times spent with these people, the meals eaten together and the times spent sharing our lives together.

Thank you so much for this precious gift; it was you who introduced all this to me. It is you who is helping me to remember everyone. I think that 'nisik' (yellow soup) and chicken livers are still some of my favourite memories), as well as eggs and tuna of course!
There's not an awful lot for me to blog about these days.
Feel a bit detached from reality- senseless. Or feelingness. It's kind of strange.

I went to pastorate last night. Correction, I went to the very last part- the bit where everyone prayed and then ate cake. But I went. There was some leftover food and I tried a bit. It was amazing food. Lebanese.

I remember when I went to Lebanon many years ago...the food was pretty good! I still remember going to one restaurant. They had this potato thing- it was wafer thin fried potato, in the shape of a tube. I've never seen anything like that before. I remember that it was pouring down with rain one day and we were invited into a beduoin tent. It was so warm- in both sense of the word: warm and cosy and homely as well. They brought out a big tray with small dishes of things like hummous and bread. And then there was tea. After being fed, there was the added fun of being dressed up by the women and had a headscarf put on my head.....It was great- all this and knowing how to speak a word of Arabic apart from shokran!

It was on that trip that I learnt two of the most important words in Arabic: Yella yella! & Habibi!

My early memories of Wetherspoons was the Older People's Pub Lunches with HUSSO. Yes, thats right. In my student days, every Friday, I would bring a group of local elderly residents from Hull to the pub....It was amazing! The participants absolutely loved it. We would alternate between a few different places, but Wetherspoons down Beverley Road was one of our favourites. I would book a table for 12.30pm and it would be all ready for us, complete with jugs of water! Thinking back, it was probably one of the first times that I really started to understand what pub food really was- the classics. I still lived at home at the time and would obviously eat Chinese food all of the time. Friday was my chance to eat 'English'....

Those were the days!

I think that mangoes must be one of my all time favourite fruits.

The ones that you get from the supermarket here in the UK are just NOT right; they're hard, crunchy, greeny/red. That's just wrong! ...I just don't understand why they are
hard enough to skewer and chargrill on the bbq!!

Mangoes should be small, YELLOW, with a thin soft skin and most importantly,...smells of mango when you take a sniff. They have to be
eaten in private because when you've finished, you'll have the delicious
mangoey juices running all over your face and hands- that's the sign of
a good mango!

Seeing this box of mangoes really reminds me of HK. Funnily, not of recent times....but of times of old. I recollect walking with my maternal grandparents down from their flat- the hill that brings you from near the top down to the bottom where we would get a tram to go yumcha (go eat breakfast dimsum). There was a stall in the middle, which always sold these mangoes.

I remember my paternal grandfather loved mangoes. I remember him in HK in the summer (I only have memories of HK in the summer as I would only ever go back during the holidays). He would slice it up and score the flesh of the fruit so that it was like a hedgehog and eat it.

For those people who are lucky enough to get hold of sweet tasting mangoes like this, besides just eating them as they are, one of the best ways is to make mango milkshake. My uncle made it once in HK for us, and it was one of the most amzaing things that I have ever drunk. I still remember it to this day. It was that good.

This is a rather bad picture.
I forgot to get a snap of the gigantic bowl of cornflakes with a huge scoop. That would have been a great photo.

So, it was Easter. There was an obscene amount of cornflakes....that means only one thing: chocolate crispies!! Yeh,...that is such a 'Sunday School' thing to do. I remember making them so many times with the kiddies. It's so simple and so yummy. Who wouldn't like a nest of chocolate cornflakes topped with mini eggs? I missed that. I wonder whether they made them in Hull this year? I miss the kiddies in Hull....may be they're not so small now, and probably taller than me, but I love them...and they will be kiddies to me as long as they are younger than me!!
I'm not really a big fan of pot noodles, but it's definately a classic Chinese 'junk food' thing and no Chinese person could really refuse it...not because it tastes good...but because of why it's eaten. For most people, it's probably eaten in the middle of the night, when hunger suddenly strikes and nothing will satisfy apart from a good bowl of savoury noodle goodness. Making pot noodles is so much easier that bringing a pan of water to the boil and slowly cooking instant noodles; less hassle and less washing up. For me, the smells of this kind of pot noodle can only be found whafting around sometime after midnight...either at home, or at a conference/retreat.

There was about 160 people at the Easter conference this weekend. A LOT of people. We handed out pot noodles for 3 nights running- yep, we ate noodles at around 1or 2am. Crazy or what?! I'm not sure whether they are eaten out of pure hungryness or as a means to stay awake!

Being at the COCM centre reminded me of my Quinta days during the COCM staff retreat. At night, us kids were left to our own devises. The boys would play playstation- Fifa football. And when the time came, I remember cooking a huge pot of instant noodles and sharing it out. On the last night, we would stay up to see the sunrise and hang out and chat. Good times.

People have often asked me what it's like being a pastor's kid or a missionary kid (MK). To be honest, I've never seen myself in that light. My mum and dad have only ever been mum and dad to me. They are pretty humble people and have never flounced around with any kind of 'title'. But somehow after this weekend, I realise that I am actually a MK. And actually, I'm pretty proud of my parents and what they do. For once, I think that I'm finally starting to discover and think about my past and a little of who I am, or what has made me who I am.

There are so many flavours of noodles- which do you prefer?
I think that they're all pretty much the same- just the outside packaging is a disguised as a different colour! They didn't have the blue seafood flavour, but I remember that was my brother's favourite one. I don't really mind,....but I think that the chicken one is pretty good!
Today, I'm not really blogging about the food. It's all about the chopping.
I did A LOT of cutiing and chopping this weekend. Mainly carrots and onions...so much so that I actually have orange hands right now!

Whenever I see anyone chopping up a whole chicken or duck, I remember my dad.
I know that I'm biased but he is the best chopper is the world! He can take a whole chicken, chop it into bite-sized pieces and then arrange it back onto a plate to look like a chicken again. It's amazing.

I tried to chop a duck and made a right mess of it. Tried again and gave up as I really didn't want anyone to choke on the small splinters of bones that I was creating as I hacked away at the meat. I guess it's one of those things that I should have paid more attention to, but dad did it so well that it was never my job to deal with that. My mum and I would cook the meat and my dad would chop. Never any other way.
Amazingness...I found a LIDL.In London.
After seeing millions of Sainsbury's Local, Tescos Metro and the odd Waitrose Mini or Morrisons...I was so overly excited to stumble across LIDL.

Yes, I am a proper cheapskate.

In Hull I used to drive past this sign probably 2-3 times a day....
I miss going there every Friday with Kelly to do the weekly shop for the to Friday night student dinner at church. We were such a good team- £1 per head...not bad for a student budget! Although the vegetables aren't all that fresh, they're not so bad if you eat it straight away. I reckon that LIDL do some of the best freshly baked pastries...if you time it right when they come straight out of the oven. My toothbrushes come from LIDL- the cheap 4 pack that comes in 4 different colours!!....Sigh...

I remember when I worked at the Sainsbury's (or Jacksons as it was called back in the day) across the road from LIDL. We watched the site where LIDL now is develop to become the rival supemarket. And not only the rival, but the better and cheaper rival. It was a strange period of time and all of us didn't know how it would impact our store. Luckily, Sainsbury's was going through a huge period of upgrade and change as well and we somehow survived the battle...and it is still there today!!! I think that both shops are busy, in their own different ways.

So, the next challenge is to find an ALDI and ASDA.
That would really make my day!

A what?
Yes, a salt water triangle.
Or as one blogger named it: savoury fried mochi dumpling.
It's a crispy fried chewy sweet pastry with a savoury pork mince and vegetable filling. Sounds kinds strange, but it's amazing,

I don't get to eat this very often, and it's actually not that often that it tastes that great. But I don't really care. I just love it!

I remember that it was Michael Chu who introduced me to this dim sum. I recall that I was in their takeaway one evening when it wasn't all that busy, and he showed me how to make it. I went home. Made it once and never again. Not because it didn't turn out right, but because the oil at home would never be able to get to a high enough temperature to make them that crispy.

When I went back to HK to see my grandma, we would definately order these. They came in 3's, and were small little fried bites- unashamedly, I always ended up eating 2 of them!. Reflecting back, the ones from MaySum (Restaurant downstairs from my grandma) were some of the best that I tried.

Another reason why this is such a rare treat is because there was no Chinese bakery/proper dim sum place in Hull. So, Grandma Ying from my church would periodically buy me a few when she went to Leeds to visit her son. Bless her! It was really very special...I would get a call one evening telling me to go over to collect them- upon collection, I would be instructed on how best to keep it and how to eat it as well!! Haha!!!.....

Now, all I need to do is to pop over to China Town to get one.Haven't done it all that often, but that first bite is absolutely amazing! Full of warm memories and flavours of home, Hull and Hong Kong. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11586147617400945760noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1041687031969640591.post-76814406660497106272013-03-18T23:57:00.002+00:002013-03-18T23:57:56.247+00:00Shwarma

I stumbled across this place when I was going to check out the CHINESE supermarket. After picking up a few random Chinesey things such as cheung fun and preserved vegetables and my sichuan oil, I wondered down the road. Saw the shisha bars...although I kind of love the warm aroma of the flavoured tobacco, I've never quite had the urge to try it out; but the smell is extremely homely and reminds me of Hull. There were numberous Chinese restuarants with the roast duck and pork hanging up in the window, the usual Tesco Express and various other food chains. And then there was this:
Sichuan Peppercorn Oil.
After almost 5 years...I have finally found this! I am so unbelievably happy. Estatic. Literally.

This stuff is AMAZING. You will never know, until you've tried it. It's not spicy, just tingly and numbing. All you need is a bowl of noodles, mix a few drops of this fragrant oil and the dish is transformed immediately. I have searched far and wide for this but have had no such luck.

Today, I decided to take a wander to Bayswater to check out the Chinese supermarket as I didn't really want to trek all the way over to Chinatown. It sells a pretty good selection of groceries; although a tad expensive. Lots of Japanese stuff and quite a lot of fresh meat and frozen things for hotpot. BUT...my heart nearly stopped when I saw this on the shelf. There was no chance that I would leave the store without this little bottle. No way on earth.

I visited Sichuan back in 2008. At that time I really had no idea about the food and had never even heard of sichuan peppercorns. During that few days, I think that I ate, smelt and saw enough chills and peppercorns to get me hooked. Someone gave me a bottle of this peppercorn oil which is one of the most memorable condiments that I have ever tried- it's like the Chinese equivalent to the Spanish olive oil. I still remember opening my suitcase in the UK to the smell of peppercorns,....

In fact, it's suposed to be really easy to make. I've tried a million and one times and it has not worked. Not even close. Somehow the oil just tastes like oil! Now I need to try no more! My Sichuan dream is finally alive once more!
It's not only lemon drizzle cake, but it's HOMEMADE!
I miss being able to bake. I contemplated making one in the microwave, and I even came across a recipe for the rice cooker but that thought very quickly stopped there. There is nothing better than freshly baked homemade cake with a cup of good old English tea!
I remember that I used to get up really early and make cake, and bring it to work when it was still warm. There was a time lat year when I went through a phase of making a lemon yoghurt cake and a chocolate cake- Mary Berry's recipe. It was amazing! I loved randomly being about to give people cake; I think that there must be something fulfilling about being able to feed cake to friends and family, because there is hardly anyone who will refuse a slice of good cake.

My earliest memory of baking was probably making butterfly cakes at primary school. You have to chop the top off the fairy cake, cut it in half and arrange the bits back onto the top of the cake by using buttercream to 'glue' it all back together. Loved baking at school! I wonder whether they still do that...maybe it's too unhealthy!...but way yummy!

Makes me think about my priorities; the next time I move house...there has GOT to be an oven!
I'm not too sure about the English-style one, but every Hong Konger will probably savour at the thought of a red hot 'dan tat', freshly baked from the local bakers. These tarts in the photograph were bought from the Italian shop round the corner from my work. They are SO good...a touch too sweet even for me, but extremely good! That what we call them in Chinese. I remember back in the day when I would make these light, crispy sweet snacks with my mum. It wasn't that often, but I definately remember talking about it.
You just have to roll out ready-made puff pastry, sprinkle on a
generous amount of brown sugar and fold, cut, shape and bake. It's so
good! And so easy to make! No effort!
The palmiers in the photograph are rather large and exquisite- I took this picture in Harrods! A bit too posh for me! The small homemade ones are just as good, especially if you eat them pipping-hot when they have just come out of the oven and have cooled down enough to crispen up.
Mc Donald's hashbrown.
There's nothing particulaly special about it...just a pretty normal fried potatocake. May be it's because I never really get the chance to eat it- I don't tend to eat breakfast outside my home, and even if I do it's usually on a weekend.
If I ever pass a McDonald's on a morning, there's always a split seceond where I debate whether to grab a hashbrown...don't need any of the big breakfast, the syrup pancakes or the bacon , sausage and egg McMuffins...just bring on the hashbrown.
Then there are the local cafes with as many breakfast set meals as there are for lunch; macaroni, French toast, noodles. For those who live more leisurely and can afford the time to enjoy a more traditional pace of life...dimsum is definately the way forward. The yumcha places are generally a little more relaxed and subdued during the weekday mornings....but the weekends are a place for families to gather together for 'early tea' or brunch. Tables of 12 or more people gather- old and young together to sample the Cantonese delights; the older generation keep the young happy by ordering their favourite dishes and the more mature entertain themselves with loud chitchat or browse the daily newspaper.
London is pretty famous for all its markets.

Coming from a place like Hull, I'm pretty much used to shopping in Tescos, ASDA, LIDL, Aldi and the occassional Sainsbury's, Morrisons or what else.

Having a choice to buy food from a market is an amazing experience. Not only is it cheaper, fresher, more exciting....BUT....it's another place to take photos!! Ha ha!! So far, in London, I have been to the market near my work (Tachbrook Street Market), breifly walked through the one in Brixton during closing time, Borough Market (of course) and North End Road Market. LOVE them all!!

There is a 'crazy' Egyptian guy called Ali who practically lives in Tachbrook Market. He's funny. That market is great for street food. At lunchtime, there is always a queue of workers lining up in true British style to wait for their kebab or falafel wrap, or their Japanese noodle bowl or hot Jamacian jerk chicken. There's the option of a Thai Pad Thai or Mexican taco. It's great. It smells great and the food is great (I think!).
I've only really tried the falafel wraps. The stall is so busy. There is literally one choice! The one variation is whether you want chilli or not. Everyone just queues, and thats how they know who's wrap is who's! You also get to munch on a free falafel as you wait!....The wraps move along the production line and makes its way on the sandwich presser, briefly grills and warms the bread, it's wrapped in paper and its ready to enjoy!
Borough Market is way too busy and full of tourists, especially by a Saturday lunchtime when things are in full swing. Actually there is no need to spend any money to get a meal!
Today I saw these small cucmbers....haven't seen any for a long time. There are still a load more markets to visit and photograph. Plenty more things to occupy my Saturdays if I want. For me, nothing will EVER beat the markets in Hong Kong. So so fresh....so much choice. In the vegetable section, the leafy greens are piled high. You can even smell the freshness. You never need to buy spring onions as you get given them free. In the meat section of the market it stinks....of meat....there is every cut of meat possible; hanging up on the rack, live chickens or frogs. The fish area is either occupied by swimming sea creatures or barely dead fish that have to be bought before they're not 'fresh' anymore. Blocks of fresh tofu, fishballs, wonton, eggs, freshly made noodle can also be bought, as well as the famous Cantonese prepared meats that go so well as part of a meal; crispy roast pork, sweet savoury char siu, soy sauce chicken....

Mmmm.....I'm hungry. And definately hungry for home; in every sense of the word.
