Haam Shui Gok

A what?
Yes, a salt water triangle.
Or as one blogger named it: savoury fried mochi dumpling.
It's a crispy fried chewy sweet pastry with a savoury pork mince and vegetable filling. Sounds kinds strange, but it's amazing,

I don't get to eat this very often, and it's actually not that often that it tastes that great. But I don't really care. I just love it!

I remember that it was Michael Chu who introduced me to this dim sum. I recall that I was in their takeaway one evening when it wasn't all that busy, and he showed me how to make it. I went home. Made it once and never again. Not because it didn't turn out right, but because the oil at home would never be able to get to a high enough temperature to make them that crispy. 

When I went back to HK to see my grandma, we would definately order these. They came in 3's, and were small little fried bites- unashamedly, I always ended up eating 2 of them!. Reflecting back, the ones from MaySum (Restaurant downstairs from my grandma) were some of the best that I tried.

Another reason why this is such a rare treat is because there was no Chinese bakery/proper dim sum place in Hull. So, Grandma Ying from my church would periodically buy me a few when she went to Leeds to visit her son. Bless her! It was really very special...I would get a call one evening telling me to go over to collect them- upon collection, I would be instructed on how best to keep it and how to eat it as well!! Haha!!!.....

Now, all I need to do is to pop over to China Town to get one.Haven't done it all that often, but that first bite is absolutely amazing! Full of warm memories and flavours of home, Hull and Hong Kong.
