Sichuan Peppercorn Oil
Sichuan Peppercorn Oil.
After almost 5 years...I have finally found this! I am so unbelievably happy. Estatic. Literally.
This stuff is AMAZING. You will never know, until you've tried it. It's not spicy, just tingly and numbing. All you need is a bowl of noodles, mix a few drops of this fragrant oil and the dish is transformed immediately. I have searched far and wide for this but have had no such luck.
Today, I decided to take a wander to Bayswater to check out the Chinese supermarket as I didn't really want to trek all the way over to Chinatown. It sells a pretty good selection of groceries; although a tad expensive. Lots of Japanese stuff and quite a lot of fresh meat and frozen things for hotpot. BUT...my heart nearly stopped when I saw this on the shelf. There was no chance that I would leave the store without this little bottle. No way on earth.
I visited Sichuan back in 2008. At that time I really had no idea about the food and had never even heard of sichuan peppercorns. During that few days, I think that I ate, smelt and saw enough chills and peppercorns to get me hooked. Someone gave me a bottle of this peppercorn oil which is one of the most memorable condiments that I have ever tried- it's like the Chinese equivalent to the Spanish olive oil. I still remember opening my suitcase in the UK to the smell of peppercorns,....
In fact, it's suposed to be really easy to make. I've tried a million and one times and it has not worked. Not even close. Somehow the oil just tastes like oil! Now I need to try no more! My Sichuan dream is finally alive once more!
